Missoula, known as “the hub of five valleys” because of its surrounding mountain ranges, is located in western Montana along the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers. Originally a mill town providing supplies to western travelers, the city grew rapidly with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway and the development of its lumber industry. Now, the city’s major employers are two hospitals and the University of Montana. Montana’s second largest city, it hosts nearly four million visitors a year making tourism an important local industry. Attractions include the Montana Museum of Arts and Culture, historic Fort Missoula, and several major film and book festivals.
